Without Mike here I wasn't sure how we were going to carve pumpkins this year. That has always been his domain, but Sydney really wanted a carved pumpkin and wasn't going for the paint idea. So I bought a pumpkin carving kit and tried to put a pattern on the pumpkins and then trace it. I should have realized I am not good at that sort of thing. Basically you have to have a lot of patience and time, and honestly I don't have much of either, so I went back to the basics and figured out how to make simple cuts in the pumpkins with the good old kitchen knife. I was so proud of myself after 2 hours of cutting with the final product. Even though "Jack and Jilly"(as Sydney called them) looked pretty amateurish, Sydney seemed appeased so it was all good.

I didn't notice until today that we have a serious petry dish full of mold growing out in both pumpkins. With all of the rain and humidity they are taking on a life of their own. When I took the lid off, there were fruit flies everywhere and a mound of what looked like black hair. It came close in grossness to the dead chipmunk, but not quite. I'm not sure how to break the news to Syd about having to throw them out. And I definitely don't want to carve anymore. This is a real dilemma just 3 days before Halloween!!
Ok, that mold is just yucky! I heard that you can spray pumpkins with a mild solution of bleach/water to keep them fresh longer or some people actually dunk their pumpkins in the bleach solution. I am with you when it comes to carving...I do not have the patience for it! I think we've only done it a few times. I think painting is the way to go :) Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteI also do not have ANY patience for carving pumpkins!! I guess I'm not the nicest mom around because I made my kids carve thier own. I have to say that its worked out very well. I did help Ella with her pumpkin only becuase it required very little carving and the use of the hot glue gun, which I can do. I will post the pumkins soon.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for working with what you had! It's not easy to take on jobs that we aren't used to! I like Susan's idea of the bleach and water...I'll have to keep that in mind for next year. No pumpkins were carved at our house this year. :)
