1st Grade Interrogation

Yesterday I went to eat lunch with Sydney and it happened to be the 100th day of school celebration, but really I went because of the intense interrogation by the vice principal she had to go through the day before.

A couple of days ago Sydney was riding home on the bus with one of the girls from her class (who was new to Sydney's bus and riding it for the first time)  and her best friend Brooklyn.  They started to feel squished with 3 in the seat and asked this little girl if she would move to a different seat since this was their assigned seat.  The little girl started crying, fell to the ground, and was beside herself.  Both of them moved out of the  seat, but this girl would not stop crying.  Long story short she got off the bus and told her mom that Sydney and Brooklyn slapped and hit her and she had scratches on her face to prove it. This accusation caused an investigation into the whole matter.

The next day at school Sydney was called down to tell her side of the story.  The vice principal told me she was white as a ghost and shaking.  Sydney does not like to be in trouble.  She told Sydney to take a deep breath, which she did, but then had to tell her to exhale as well.  After interviewing all three girls the alleged victim finally confessed that she had scratched herself and lied about the girls hurting her in anyway. (She comes from a rough situation at home and has self-esteem issues)

Amazingly when I went to the classroom yesterday, Sydney and this little girl were talking to each other as if nothing had happened. (If only we all could be like little children) Sydney also learned a lesson about not judging someone just because they are accused of something.  In a court of law, Sydney would definitely be a prosecutor naturally,  but because of her experience this last week I think she gained a new appreciation for the role and necessity of defense lawyers too.

  1. Wow! That is a lot for a little first grader to take in. I don't think Jarem would be able to handle that! I am glad the girl confessed so the case was able to be closed! Poor Syd!
