Unplugged
Saturday we had a big ol' Southern storm come through that left us without power for about 10 hours. The kids were so excited when the power first went off. They built forts, played flashlight tag, took showers in the rain and pulled out games that had been sitting on the shelf for months. Then at about hour 7 they started to have withdrawls and lose faith. They didn't know how they were going to live without ipods, tv, and phones. You would have thought they had been asked to pull a handcart across the plains. Luckily for them the power came back on and all was well, all was well! Personally, I wish we were unplugged a little more often.
I loved this quote from Elder Ian Ardern this past general conference:
"Electronic games and cyber acquaintances are no lasting substitute for real friends who can give an encouraging hug, who can pray for us and seek after our best interest. . .I know our greatest happiness comes as we tune in to the Lord (see Alma 37:37) and to those things which bring a lasting reward, rather than mindlessly tuning in to countless hours of status updates, Internet farming, and catapulting angry birds at concrete walls. I urge each of us to take those things which rob us of precious time and determine to be their master, rather than allowing them through their addictive nature to be the master of us."
Looks like we weren't the only ones with power failure this week :) Luckily yours was short. When our power went out, the girls told us that they never want to become Amish because they couldn't live without electricity. I thought that was pretty funny. I have to admit I did miss the electricity, but mostly for the heat. It got stinkin' cold! BRRR!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great quote. Glad you guys are okay
ReplyDeleteWe got a little of that storm too, but it didn't take our power! I agree with you, I think it is good to lose power every once in awhile, but I don't like the cold either, Susan! I LOVE the ending quote. Thanks for sharing!
