July 2009--Nauvoo

After visiting Winter Quarters we drove to Nauvoo, IL. We had a great time there despite the rain we encountered. We have always loved Nauvoo and feel a special attachment to the temple there. When we lived in Missouri and Michael was in medical school we were part of the Nauvoo Stake, so when the temple was dedicated in 2002 we were able to volunteer at the open house several times and be in the temple when Pres. Hinkley dedicated it. It is one of the most unique and beautiful buildings around.

Paige at Joseph, Emma, and Hyrum's grave site.
McKell looking at Emma's grave.
All three of them are buried next to Joseph and Emma's original home in Nauvoo.
This is the view of the Mississippi River from the Smith family home and grave site.
Joseph Smith's parents are buried near him as well.
This is a view of the mansion house with our tour guide from Russia. He told us to "explore with your eyes and not your hands." Jackson walked in right after that and sat down in an original chair that was Joseph Smith's. Our tour guide got very nervous and told him to move immediately. Museums that are not hands-on are hard for Syd and Jackson.
Actors dressed up like Joseph and Emma outside the mansion house.

Another view of the mansion house. Joseph only lived here for a short time before he was killed.
Outside the Smith home
The Browning Home was Jackson's favorite spot in Nauvoo. Jonathon Browning invented some of the most famous guns still used today. Jackson took picture after picture of all the guns they have displayed. I think he likes guns??

This statue is new to Nauvoo since we were there in 2002. This is Joseph and Hyrum riding to Carthage where they would be killed. The statue faces the temple and behind is the view to the Mississippi River.
Most of us in front of the temple. (Sydney wasn't cooperating again)
This is a picture of the outdoor Nauvoo pageant. It rained right up until the pageant started. They have improved that pageant since we saw it in 2002.

  1. I am SO jealous that you guys got to be in Missouri for the dedication. It was only a few months after we moved and we sat in the chapel in Logan very touched, but very sad that we just missed being there. It was a neat dedication. Also, I'm nearly positive that the tall woman in the green dress in the Nauvoo pageant pic on the back left is my cousin, Dana. It was so funny when I recognized her. Maybe it will be us next year??? :)
